Freezer
White key 1. Grabs a slice of what’s playing, from a whole bar down to a 16th, and repeats it while you hold the key. Turn up the roll for a beat repeat’s build-up.
| Knob | Page 1 | Page 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Length: 1/16, 1/8T, 1/8, 1/4T, 1/4, 1/2T, 1/2, 1 bar (default 1 bar) | Mix |
| 2 | Feedback: the input overdubbed into the repeats (default 0, pure repeat) | Stereo: the left loop up to 45 ms longer (default off) |
| 3 | Roll: the length divided, off, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, no shorter than 1/64 bar; one step per 3 detents (default off) | Band |
| 4 | Gate: how much of each repeat you hear, all of it down to its first eighth, a stutter (default all) | Level |
- Capture: pressing the key waits for the next 16th, then records. The first pass is the incoming signal, so there’s no gap; after one length it repeats. Releasing the key goes back to the incoming signal. Pressed again before the repeats have faded, they play on until the next 16th starts the new capture.
- Length follows the tempo. The freezer keeps recording past the length (up to 5 s), so the length can be turned up while repeating; turned past what’s recorded, it plays on through the recording until the length is reached.
- Feedback: at 0 the loop repeats unchanged. Turning up mixes the input into it (up to 30% at 75%, 80% at the top, where the loop also fades by 10% per pass).
- Roll: a beat repeat’s build-up, played by hand. Each step right halves the repeat: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 of the length knob 1 sets, never shorter than 1/64 bar (a triplet’s stops a halving before). A step takes at the start of the next repeat, so the repeats stay on the grid, and each repeats the start of the capture, following on from the last repeat through the seam crossfade. Turned back to off, the next repeat is the whole length again, in one move. Where the knob is is the roll: nothing counts along behind it, and a capture with the roll still on 1/4 repeats a quarter of the length from the start. Set the length to 1/4, press the key, then turn the roll right a step at a time (1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64) as the build-up; let go of the key, or turn the roll back to off.
- Gate silences the rest of each repeat, faded in and out over 2 ms: turned up, the repeats turn into a stutter.
- The seam where a repeat starts again has a 5 ms crossfade (shorter on repeats under 20 ms).
- LEDs: the key is purple; the knobs go purple to light blue.
